The Mesick Bulldog Bands have been around since the consolidation of the area schools
in the early 1960's.
The band program has been a strong tradition for the school district and the community,
which has earned
the high school band its motto: "The Pride of Mesick High!"
Even though our school is a small, rural district, the band offers a great program where students
learn the fundamentals of
Marching band, Concert band, Pep band, and a jazz band club.
The classes produce a great atmosphere of learning and fun.
Growing up: Mr. Jones was born and raised in Troy, Michigan, a suburb of Metro Detroit where he graduated from Troy High School. While living there, he spent his summers working as a lifeguard and manager at the Troy Family Aquatic Center, and also worked one summer as a High School Boys counselor at the prestigious Interlochen Arts Camp.
Education: Mr. Jones attended Albion College where he earned his Bachelor's degree and his K-12 Michigan Education Teaching Certificate. Moving to Traverse City, Mr. Jones taught band at Pine River Area Schools for 2 years before accepting his current position as the band director for Mesick Consolidated Schools. He later received his Master's degree in Educational Technology through Michigan State University along with his Michigan Professional Teaching Certificate.
Music Activities: The students at Mesick are like a second family for Mr. Jones. However, if he does have any spare time, he enjoys performing on some occasions. Mr. Jones' has performed as a tuba player with the Interlochen Faculty Band and Sousa Band, the Traverse City Symphony Orchestra, the Traverse City Encore Winds, the Cadillac Symphony Orchestra, and the Clam Lake Band (Cadillac). Mr. Jones has also performed and conducted at the Old Town Playhouse. During the summer, he enjoys judging the marching bands in the Traverse City Cherry Festival Parades.
In 2011, he became the director of the National Cherry Festival 'Second-Time Arounders' band.
Overall, Mr. Jones and his wife enjoy spending time with their daughter
and travelling around 'Northern Michigan.'
